Answering The Question: Is SEO Dead?
You’ve probably heard people chanting “SEO is dead” for years—it’s a phrase that pops up every time Google rolls out a big change. In reality, SEO hasn’t disappeared; it’s simply not the same creature it was a decade ago.
You can no longer rely on keyword stuffing and buying backlinks like it’s 2010. Today, Google’s algorithms are smarter, and users expect more. SEO is very much alive, but the rules of the game have changed.
Think about it this way: when was the last time you landed on a clunky, keyword-heavy page and thought, “Wow, this is helpful”? Probably never. Your focus in 2025 should be on search intent, useful content, and technical excellence.

Here’s a timeline of how SEO strategies have changed and developed:
AI-driven search results, featured snippets, and zero-click answers have raised the bar. Features like Google’s SGE (Search Generative Experience) and Google’s Search Generative Experience now use AI to provide complete, summarized answers—often called AI overviews or AI-generated answers—at the top of the search result.
This shift leads to more zero-click content, as users get information directly from the search page, impacting traditional organic traffic and how websites appear in search rankings.
I see brands getting left behind when they refuse to adapt. But those who invest in quality content, authoritative sources, and technical best practices are still reaping rewards. Adjust your strategies, and you’ll find SEO is far from finished.
Mortal Enemies: Which Is Better In 2025? Paid vs Organic
Here’s a quick snapshot:
- Paid traffic: You invest in ads (Google Ads, Facebook Ads) to drive visitors quickly.
- Organic traffic: You earn visibility through content, SEO, and natural search results.
You might notice paid traffic seems instant. Your results are fast, but your costs never stop. Once you pause your ad campaign, the traffic comes to a halt. In my experience, this can feel like renting a hotel room—comfortable as long as you keep paying.
Organic traffic takes more time and effort. You build up authority, optimize pages, and wait for search engines to notice. Organic search remains a vital source of sustainable website traffic, especially when your product pages are optimized for relevant queries. But once your pages rank, the results last much longer. It’s like owning an apartment—slower to start, but there’s long-term stability and no ongoing rent.
Also, we’ve done a more in-depth analysis of SEO vs SEM in our previous article.
Here’s a simple comparison table for 2025:
I’ve run projects where a mix delivered the best outcomes. If you need quick wins, paid works. For sustainable growth, you can’t ignore organic. Strong SEO performance is essential for maintaining visibility and long-term results in organic search. Both play a role, and most sites use a blend—especially as competition in 2025 makes any single approach risky.
Reasons Why Some Digital Marketers Think SEO Is Dead
Some traditional digital marketers argue that SEO is dead because search algorithms have become much more complex. You might notice that what worked in 2015 is almost irrelevant in 2025. Tactics like keyword stuffing or building low-quality backlinks now do more harm than good.
As a seasoned SEO consultant, I’ve seen many clients frustrated by how long it takes to rank. Today, major changes to search engine algorithms, often powered by AI, make the process unpredictable. Marketers miss the days when following a simple checklist led to top results.
In the past, users always had to click through to get answers. Now, Google often provides answers directly on its results page, which can mean less traffic for your website—even if you still rank highly.
Social media and paid ads have also distracted a lot of digital marketers. Some believe it’s quicker and more reliable to allocate budgets to paid campaigns rather than wait and hope for SEO to pay off. In some industries, that’s a fair observation, especially for new brands.
Rapid Industry Changes And Algorithm Updates
You’ve probably noticed how search engine algorithms never seem to sit still for long. Google, in particular, rolls out updates numerous times each year, shaking up search rankings sometimes overnight. The result is a rollercoaster for many websites—SEO success one week can turn into a dip in traffic the next.
Frequent updates aim to provide users with more relevant and trustworthy results. However, even when your content is well-researched and high-quality, you might still see sudden changes in your rankings. This unpredictability leaves many wondering if their SEO efforts are truly paying off.
What used to work reliably—like keyword stuffing or exact-match backlinks—simply doesn’t cut it anymore.
Search engines now prioritize user intent and content value over old-school tactics. Modern SEO practices emphasize content quality and require staying informed about search trends to maintain visibility and adapt to ongoing changes.
If you want to future-proof your SEO strategy, adaptability and a focus on genuine quality should be at the top of your list.
Increased Competition And Content Saturation
As Google Search gets more sophisticated, the Search Results are now saturated with many different contents and are not just limited to blog posts
You’ve probably noticed how easy it is now to publish online. Everyone has access to tools that let them write, design, and share content in just a few clicks.
The result?
More blogs, videos, and social posts are fighting for space than ever before.
This flood of content means search engines need to sort through a massive volume of similar information. Standing out, especially if you’re new or working in a crowded space, can feel like wading through a packed stadium.
There’s simply more noise to cut through before your message reaches the right audience.
It’s not just about quantity—it’s also about quality and timing. When audiences see a dozen versions of the same topic, differentiation becomes vital. If you want your work to rise above the rest, originality and strong value are your best tools.
Producing authentic content, developed by a knowledgeable content creator, and leveraging unique content ideas that reflect real expertise will help you stand out and align with what search engines and users are looking for.
Longer Timeframes For Results
SEO is not a shortcut to instant growth. In today’s landscape, you often need well over a year before seeing significant organic results, especially if your website is new to the scene.
The main reason is increased competition and the way search algorithms weigh domain authority and trust.
Building these from scratch takes consistent publishing, technical fixes, and backlink growth over many months. These efforts are essential for improving your organic rankings, as search engines reward sites that demonstrate authority and trustworthiness.
If you’re after quick wins, SEO isn’t the channel for you.
However, for those willing to play the long game, patience does pay off—those steady, compounding gains can set a solid foundation that lasts.
Outdated Practices No Longer Work
You may remember when keyword stuffing and spammy backlink schemes could push a site up the rankings. Those shortcuts no longer deliver results. Search engines have become smarter and now recognize these manipulative tactics.
Stuffing keywords is now recognized as an ineffective tactic that no longer guarantees high rankings.
Instead, algorithms prioritize quality, relevance, and genuine authority. Modern AI models favor trusted sources and recognizable voices in search rankings.
If your content isn’t focused on the user’s real needs, it won’t perform well. Relying on tricks from the past often leads to penalties rather than higher visibility.
You’ll see better results by investing in clear, well-researched information and building trustworthy connections in your industry.
Taking shortcuts simply isn’t worth it—search engines are much better at rewarding effort, not shortcuts.
The Impact of AI on SEO
Artificial intelligence is reshaping the SEO industry at a rapid pace. AI-powered tools like ChatGPT and Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE) are changing how search engines interpret and deliver results.
Today’s search engines use AI to better understand user intent, context, and the quality of content—making it more important than ever to create content that is both high-quality and engaging.
Entering the AI stage, Google’s top results, especially for Informational Keywords which are now being absorbed by Google’s AI Review
AI-generated content is on the rise, but it’s not just about volume. Businesses need to ensure their content stands out by being genuinely helpful and relevant to their target audience. AI tools can also help optimize content for voice search, which is becoming increasingly popular as users turn to conversational queries.
Leveraging natural language processing allows you to write content that feels more human and answers questions in a way that resonates with real people.
As AI-driven search becomes the norm, adapting your SEO strategies to focus on user experience, intent, and authenticity is essential for staying visible in search results.
New Discovery Channels
The way people search for information is constantly evolving, and new discovery channels are emerging beyond traditional search engines.
Voice search, visual search, and social media platforms are now major players in how users find content online. Optimizing for these channels means thinking beyond just text-based queries—consider how your content appears in voice search results, image searches, and across platforms like Instagram and Facebook.
By embracing these new discovery methods, businesses can reach a wider audience and drive more search traffic. Using analytics tools such as Google Analytics helps you track where your visitors are coming from and which channels are most effective.
This data-driven approach allows you to refine your content strategy, ensuring you’re meeting people where they search and maximizing your online visibility.
Case Studies Showing SEO Success
Despite the challenges brought by AI and evolving search engines, many businesses are thriving by embracing modern SEO strategies.
For instance, a recent study by Ahrefs found that companies investing in SEO saw a 25% increase in organic traffic and a 15% boost in conversions.
Similarly, Moz reported that businesses using AI-powered SEO tools experienced a 30% improvement in search engine rankings and a 20% rise in organic traffic.
These results highlight the power of adapting to the changing SEO landscape. By leveraging technical SEO tactics like optimizing page speed and ensuring mobile-friendliness, businesses can improve their search engine rankings and attract more visitors.
The key takeaway?
Continually optimize content, stay up to date with the latest SEO strategies, and use both AI tools and technical best practices to drive sustainable organic growth.
Personal Case Study 1: A Pet Industry
Due to confidentiality reasons, we will not be publishing the name of our client.
The keyword performance shown in Ahrefs above is an indicator that, with good content, keywords can still perform splendidly.
Here is one of our success stories for our client in the pet industry. Before they approached us, they weren’t ranking for many generic keywords—mostly just branded ones.
However, after doing extensive research on keywords and user search intent, we were able to decipher what pet owners are looking for when it comes to dog and cat food.
From there, we took references from all the top results and see where we can do better. Essentially, we are using the content gap strategy and also putting our readers first before the technical bits.
Just barely a month after uploading the articles, we were able to see substantial growth in key keywords in the industry. Few of these articles even made it to the top 10 of Google search results from our targeted keywords!
What Our Team Thinks
As SEO practitioners ourselves, our team do have some thoughts about the current SEO situation.
Our editorial team went around and got some pretty interesting insights from both our operations and technical SEO teams!
“From a technical standpoint, not much has changed, really. What was needed traditionally, I am still doing. You still have a human eye to oversee “small” technical things like robots.txt files and sitemaps. Doing these small technical things in the right way still goes a long way, I feel.” – Jonie Toh, Team Lead for One Search Digital Marketing Pro R&D team.
“I did get nervous at one point. I have heard tales about mass content curation and how companies/agencies are forgoing human writers in favour of AI. From a writing background, this pains me. Still, I strongly believe even when we are writing for SEO purposes, our intent is still to benefit readers. That for me is very hard for AI to replicate.” – Chloe Hor, Senior SEO Executive at One Search Pro Digital Marketing.
“Dead isn’t the exact term I’d use to describe SEO. If anything, I think it is improving, and we have to up our game. I’ve only been in the SEO industry for barely a year and I’ve already went through different phases of SEO. The Google updates are relentless, and we as a team really do need to pick up our pace to deliver the best SEO results for our clients.” – Trystan Liew, SEO cum Digital Marketing Executive at One Search Pro Digital Marketing.
Despite his busy schedule, we’ve managed to get hold of our CEO, Eric Ang. He has been in the SEO industry longer than any of us. Let’s see what he has to say!
“This is an awkward conversation for sure. I can’t say SEO is dead, but it is rapidly changing and evolving. As much as it is tiresome, our SEO team would get together every month to crack our heads on what’s happening in the SEO world. From there, we would devise current and future plans on how we can improve and better our services. Whatever we do, we need to be slightly ahead of the curve or else there’s a chance for us to be weeded out. – Eric Ang, CEO of One Search Pro Digital Marketing.
Wrapping Up
SEO has always been evolving. The only concern is probably its speed due to the advent of conventional AI usage.
We admit, we at One Search Pro do utilise AI with our SEO operations, but we ensure that what we curate, especially content, is genuine and authentic. But when it comes to pure SEO results, you can very much still optimise your website and content for the best SEO performance. It’s just that the way to get there is much tougher.
All in all, SEO is not dead and very much alive. The competition is high, and practitioners are adapting and adopting new strategies to keep up. Still, we understand how difficult SEO is, so if you need a hand, you can always contact us here!
