Ask AI about Malaysia: 1 in 5 tourist questions get a bad answer

We put 97 everyday visitor questions to five AI assistants and checked every answer against official sources. Most answers were right, but 19 questions got a wrong, outdated or incomplete answer from at least one of them. One recommended a forest trail that is closed by law.

Feature graphic for the study "We asked AI 97 tourist questions about Malaysia". Key figures: 1 in 5 questions got a wrong, outdated or incomplete answer from at least one AI; up to an RM10,000 fine for entering a closed trail an AI said was open year-round; 470 AI answers checked against official sources. A bar chart shows answers that missed by assistant: ChatGPT 0 wrong and 3 incomplete, Gemini 3 wrong and 3 incomplete, Perplexity 1 wrong and 5 incomplete, Google AI Mode 3 wrong and 5 incomplete, Google AI Overviews 3 wrong and 4 incomplete.

Visit Malaysia 2026 is bringing millions of visitors, and more of them plan with an AI assistant than with a guidebook. So we asked the assistants the questions a tourist actually asks: how much is the ticket, is it open on Monday, can I still go there, what do I need to bring. We asked ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and the AI Overviews at the top of Google search, then graded every answer against the attraction's own website or a government source.

Key findings

Every AI quote below is from our raw answer file, and every official fact links to its source.

1. A closed trail, recommended as open

Asked "Can I hike the Pine Tree Hill trail at Fraser's Hill?", Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overview all said yes, with a permit. The AI Overview called it "open year-round" and cited hiking app listings. But the Pahang Forestry Department closed the Pine Tree, Twin Peak and Gunung Semangkok trails in the Raub forest reserve "until a date to be announced". Under Section 47 of the National Forestry Act 1984, anyone who enters faces a fine of up to RM10,000, up to three years in jail, or both.

2. "You do not need a passport"

Google's AI Overview told tourists, "No, you do not need a passport to visit Zoo Negara", citing a Facebook post. The zoo's own ticket page asks visitors to "bring along the original passport / ID card at the ticket counter for verification", because the price depends on it.

3. Old prices live on

Google AI Mode quoted RM98 for a foreign adult ticket to the Petronas Twin Towers, citing a travel blog. The official price is now RM127 on weekdays and RM137 at weekends. Gemini gave the Penang Hill funicular fare as "RM30 (or up to RM40)", but the Penang Hill Corporation charges foreign adults RM40.

4. Closed-day mix-ups

Google AI Mode said the Petronas Twin Towers are "closed on Mondays for maintenance", and the AI Overview said Petrosains is "closed on Mondays". Both actually close only on the first and third Monday of the month (Petronas Twin Towers, Petrosains). All five assistants got the maintenance-day closure of the Langkawi SkyCab wrong or incomplete, compared with its operation calendar. Hours and closed days were the weakest category overall.

5. Even Visit Malaysia 2026 itself

Gemini said Visit Malaysia 2026 "concludes on December 31, 2026". The government has extended the campaign to the end of 2027.

6. Google's AI answers made most of the errors

Google AI Mode and the AI Overviews at the top of search results made six of the 10 plainly wrong or outdated answers. ChatGPT made none.

Why AI gets it wrong

The assistants mostly repeat whatever is most visible online. When an attraction's own page is thin, hard to read or out of date, a travel blog, a ticket reseller or an old forum post fills the gap. Most of the misses we found were facts that changed in the last two years (a price rise, a new closed day, a closure) where older pages still outrank the official one.

What attractions and tourism businesses can do

  • Keep prices, opening hours and closures on one clear, dated page of your own website, in plain text rather than an image or PDF.
  • Add structured data (opening hours, prices, events) so search engines and AI can read it reliably.
  • Update your Google Business Profile the same day anything changes, including temporary closures.
  • Ask the AI assistants your own visitors' questions every few months, and fix the pages they quote.

If you want AI search to get your business right, our SEO team can help.

Methodology

  • Questions: 100 everyday tourist questions about prices and fees, opening hours and closed days, whether a place is still open, and entry and travel rules. They cover attractions in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Putrajaya, Melaka, Penang, Kedah, Perak, Pahang, Terengganu, Sabah and Sarawak, plus Visit Malaysia 2026 itself.
  • Official answers: each answer was checked on 13 October 2026 against the attraction's own website, its operator or a government source. Where no official page existed (mostly for closures), we used news reports.
  • AI answers: each question was asked once to each assistant on 14 October 2026, in English, with web search on and a Malaysian location, through the DataForSEO API. The models were ChatGPT (gpt-6.1-sol), Gemini (gemini-3.8-flash), Perplexity (sonar), Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews.
  • Grading: each answer was graded as correct, incomplete, outdated or wrong against the official answer, and the cases quoted on this page were checked by hand.
  • Excluded: three questions where official sources disagree with each other (Thean Hou Temple's closing time, whether tourists can use the KLIA autogates on their first arrival, and where Visit Malaysia 2026 was launched). That leaves 97 questions and 470 answers.

Caveats

  • AI answers change from day to day. This is one answer per assistant per question, on one day.
  • All assistants had web search on. Without it, they rely on older training data and would likely make more mistakes on recent changes.
  • Prices and opening hours change. Official answers are correct as of 13 October 2026.
