Choosing an advertising agency in Malaysia starts with one question: do you need a global network agency or an independent? This guide answers that, explains who the big agency groups are, and lists agencies whose websites we checked were live in October 2026. Before your first briefing, a tool like answer the public can show what your customers are asking, which helps sharpen the brief.
If you need design and brand work more than ads, see our guide to creative agencies in Malaysia. If you need SEO, social and paid search under one roof, see the best digital marketing agencies. If you would rather grow reach through your own channels first, our guide to social media traffic is a good starting point.
Should you hire a network agency or an independent?
Hire a network agency if you are a large brand running campaigns across several markets; hire an independent if you are an SME or want flexible, local work. Network agencies belong to global holding groups. Independents are locally owned.
| Network agency | Independent agency | |
|---|---|---|
| Examples in Malaysia | Grey (Petaling Jaya), Havas, VML, Leo, NAGA DDB Tribal | One Search Pro, Fishermen, Demojo, Mantra |
| Budget band | Large, multi-market retainers | Project or monthly retainers sized for SMEs |
| Best for | Regional brand launches, TV and mass media | Local campaigns, digital ads, SEO and social |
| Access to seniors | Often limited on small accounts | Usually direct |
| Global tools and data | Shared from the group | Varies by agency |
Who are the big advertising agency groups?
The biggest players are holding companies: WPP, Omnicom, Publicis, Dentsu and Havas. Wikipedia’s advertising agency entry lists these plus IPG as the “big six”, but Omnicom completed its acquisition of IPG on 26 November 2025, so IPG agencies now sit under Omnicom.
Most well-known Malaysian network agencies, such as Grey, VML, Leo and DDB, belong to one of these groups.
How can you check an advertising agency in Malaysia?
Use two public checks: 4As Malaysia membership and Kancil Awards results. Then ask for recent Malaysian work and read Google reviews.
- 4As Malaysia. The Association of Accredited Advertising Agents Malaysia was formed in 1971 and is the main industry body for agencies. Check its member agencies page.
- Kancil Awards. Run by 4As Malaysia. At the Kancil Awards 2025, NAGA DDB Tribal won Agency of the Year and Leo Malaysia won the Golden Kancil for McDonald’s.
- Case studies. Ask for work in your industry from the last two years.
- Reviews. Google reviews show how agencies treat clients after the pitch.

Frequently asked questions
What are the top 5 advertising agencies in Malaysia?
There is no official ranking. A fair way to shortlist is by award results: at the Kancil Awards 2025, NAGA DDB Tribal won Agency of the Year, Leo Malaysia won the Golden Kancil and VML Malaysia teams won the Young Kancils. Grey and Havas also run Malaysian offices. For SMEs, an independent agency is often the better fit.
Who are the big five advertising agencies?
The 'big' advertising groups are holding companies: WPP, Omnicom, Publicis, Dentsu and Havas. IPG used to make it a big six, but Omnicom completed its acquisition of IPG on 26 November 2025.
How do I check if an advertising agency is credible in Malaysia?
Check whether it is a member of 4As Malaysia, look for Kancil Awards results, ask for recent Malaysian case studies, and read its Google reviews.
Should a small business hire a network agency or an independent?
Usually an independent. Network agencies are built for large, multi-market brands with large budgets. Independents tend to be more flexible on scope and give smaller accounts senior attention.
Is an advertising agency the same as a digital marketing agency?
Not quite. An advertising agency focuses on campaign ideas and paid media; a digital marketing agency usually also handles SEO, social media and websites. Many Malaysian agencies now do both.
